Missing few weeks for Caanoo’s official launch, the new handheld by GPH: instead of the usual comparison with portable consoles such DS & PSP, try to compare it to a more sophisticated device like Apple iPhone (not to specific model).
First, as you know, iPhone is a phone (more specifically a smartphone) and therefore has all the features of modern mobile phones such as UMTS, Bluetooth, camera, WiFi (although Caanoo also supports WiFi, by USB dongle), but we’ll focus on gaming device and multimedia player aspects.
No matter how innovative is iPhone, to use an analog stick and the “real” buttons, instead of the touchpad, makes the gaming experience much more satisfying and rewarding.
Especially, there is no danger of ruining an expensive screen, with games that require repeated or heavier pressure, and Caanoo fits in your hands much better (just feel controls).
Both have motion sensor, vibration and support for 3D games (on the latter iPhone is more advanced). The Caanoo hasn’t multitouch, however it has a 3.5” LCD Touchscreen.
But if you love arcade games, you’re a retrogamer, or want to emulate a lot of old consoles, then Caanoo widely beats iPhone.
In fact, officially iPhone has only few emulators (and if you want something more, you have to jailbreak, which is illegal!), instead Caanoo’ll have dozens of emulators available.
Being an Open Source console Linux-based (that I’ld say much more robust than iPhoneOS), you can freely put any free apps or games, just copying them on SD card.
And if you’re interested in programming and create your own application, you must not pay anything, but just download the official Caanoo SDK Caanoo (for Windows or Linux).
You’ll can distribuite through FunGP, and you decide if ore free or to earn something.
Caanoo won’t have only homebrews, but also commercial games (such as iPhone) and at its launch various kinds of games will be available, from rhythm’n'game (Rhytmhos) to RPG (Liar), from beat’em’up (Asura Cross) to sport simulator game (PGM2010).

Coming to multimedia aspects, you can listen songs, play videos or read text files on both, but with Caanoo it doesnt’ need any application such as iTunes to put mp3s or xvid movies. Just copy them on SD.
Then Caanoo has USB host, i.e. you can attach any USB stick or external drive, or other supported devices (keyboard, WiFi, etc..) and e.g. watch the latest Simpsons’ episodes without
problems.
Don’t forget that supports SD cards upto 32GiB, so if you need to expand, buy a new/bigger card . Nothing easier!
In conclusion: the iPhone is more cool and stylish gadget (and more expensive too), but if you’re looking for a complete gaming handheld with multimedia features, the Caanoo is ideal.
