The hopes of a Shenmue 3 may have fallen off the point of no return.
Sega Sammy Holdings announced today that Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki stepped down–the publisher used the term “retired”–from his position as a R&D creative officer with the company. According to a Sega of America representative to Gamespot, Suzuki will still work with the publisher as manager of the R&D department for Sega’s AM Plus division in a much more diminished capacity. Sega’s AM Plus division has released arcade games in Japan, such as Psy Phi, a touchscreen fighter, and a character-driven racing title called Sega Race TV.
Suzuki, who was inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame in 2003, is responsible for handling some of Sega’s biggest franchises. He’s best known for his workings with Virtua Fighter and Shenmue. Since his induction in to the AIAS Hall of Fame, however, he’s largely fallen out of sight. In recent times, he spoke of a now-shelved massively multiplayer online role-playing game based off the Shenmue titles called Shenmue Online. Last year, Sega of America CEO Simon Jeffrey mistakenly told blog site Gamasutra (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3756/the_evolution_of_sega_a_.php?page=4) that Suzuki was no longer an employee of Sega at all.
We here at Sonic Retro wish Yu Suzuki the best in wherever life takes him.
