I think it is a problem related to power supply connector.
Try open GP2X and look if there is something strange with the connector.

As Puck2099 has said, the power connector could fail. It "cuts" the batteries when you insert the external power, but it's like the audio jacks, It's a contact which is displaced and maybe it can't return to it's position, so it doesn't make contact. Did you use OFFICIAL power supply? If not, maybe you used a "similar" jack, but not exactly the same and deformed the power connector internaly... If it was official, speak with your retailer to change the GP2x because if you used in a proper way both items, it MUST be in warranty (the power connector internaly DIDN't return to its position= Factory fail!!)
Is like a Hi-Fi. You insert the headphones jack, the loudspeakers get muted, and when you retire the headphones, the sound returns to the loudspeakers... Same way the power connector works... Maybe you remember some Hi-Fi you take off the headphone and there is no sound in the loudspeakers...
On the other hand, people has reported problems with some batteries which positive side was not long enought to touch the connector, or nearly touch but sometimes not...
