Fairies, comedy, magic potions, love... and a lot of imagination
make this one of Shakespeare's truly original masterpieces,
which ends with Puck's suggestion that the audience may get the impression
that the whole story has been "but a dream."
THE MAIN CHARACTERS
-Puck
Now I'm not really a person, I'm more of a "hobgoblin" as they say, some strange kind of fairy creature. Some people call me Robin Goodfellow and I am a jester in the court of Oberon, the King of the Fairies. I don't want to sound big-headed but I must say without me this play would just not be the same - I'm the one who gets all the action going, if you know what I mean. There's nothing I like more than having a bit of fun with those poor mortals - it's so easy to play tricks on them. I just can't resist it!
-Nick Bottom
I'm one of the craftsmen from Athens who is in the forest preparing to take part in the play which will be performed at the wedding of Theseus, the Duke of Athens. I know a lot about everything and I'm a very good actor. You don't believe me? Ask anyone, and take no notice when they say I'm always making mistakes. The actors rely on me for good advice but the problem is they don't seem to take it seriously - I can't think why! That Puck character says he gave me the head of an ass, but that still didn't stop the Fairy Queen from falling in love with me - I'm wonderful!
THE STORY
Father versus daughter
Theseus, Duke of Athens is preparing
for his marriage to Hippolata. In the middle
of the preparations Egeus, an Athenian nobleman,
arrives at the court with his daughter Hermia
and two young men, Demetrius and Lysander.
Egeus wants Hermia to marry Demetrius,
but she won't because she loves Lysander.
Theseus tells Hermia she has until his wedding
to make a decision about whether to obey her father or not, and if she doesn't she may find herself in a convent or dead. Lysander suggests
escaping secretly to the forest and Hermia agrees:
"Tomorrow truly I will I meet thee...
Demetrius no more shall see my face;
Lysander and myself will fly this place."
They tell Helena of their secret plan.
Helena is in fact in love with Demetrius,
so she tells him what the lovers plan to do.
He goes after them into the forest, followed by Helena.
Woodland wonders
In the forest there are two very different groups of characters. One is the group of fairies who are led by King Oberon and Queen Titania. The other is a group of Athenian craftsmen who are preparing a play to perform at the Duke's wedding. Oberon and Titania are arguing about an Indian servant boy that Oberon wants for himself, but she won't let him go. On Oberon's orders, Puck, one of his servants gets a special love potion which, if put on a person's eyes, makes them fall in love with the first person they see. Oberon has seen Demetrius be unkind to Helena and he knows Helena really loves Demetrius so he tells Puck: "Anoint his eyes,
But do it when the next thing he espies May be the lady."
Unfortunately, Puck makes a mistake and the potion is given to Lysander who abandons Hermia and falls for Helena. He tries to correct the mistake, but the result is that Demetrius falls in love with Helena too! She thinks they are all making fun of herand Hermia, quite naturally, wants to know what is going on. Meanwhile, the two young men both get lost in the forest.
Bottom the Ass
Now it is the turn of Titania to suffer the efferts of the love potion which Puck has put on her eyes and she wakes up to fall madly in love with Bottom, one of the craftsmen in the wood, who now has the head of an ass which Puck has given him. He doesn't know about this, and thinks it quite a normal thing for the Queen to be in love with him because he is so perfect. Before the magic spell is broken, Oberon is determined to take advantage of Titania's infatuation with Bottom and he makes Titania give him the Indian boy: "I'll to my Queen and beg her Indian boy; And then I will her charmed eye release From monsters view, and all things shall be peace."
So in the end he gets what he wants -Titania's servant for himself.
Meanwhile the couples in the forest have managed to get themselves back with their respective partners; Demetrius with Helena and Hermia with Lysander. They go to Athens where they are married. Finally, they all watch the craftsmen's play and the fairies disappear into the forest -all except Puck who asks the audience to imagine all that they have just seen was nothing more than a Midsummer Night's dream.
