PSP Firmware Update to Version 1.50 (New menu languages French, Spanish, German, ... and more!) - Sony's PSP Connect goes live

Three months after release of the PSP™ in Japan, Sony today released their V1.50 firmware update for their handheld video gaming device. Just in time with the USA release of the PSP™, the firmware update contains various improvements over the old version, as well as introduces many new languages - however, unfortunately it does not contain any updates from the "leaked" update list that appeared on the net in January. Further down on the page, you may want to check out Sony™ Connect PSP™, featuring an introduction to movies on the PSP™ along with sample downloads.

Updating your PSP™ with the new firmware takes around 15 minutes. We tested it on our Japanese PSP™ systems and confirmed it is working fine, upgrading our Japanese V1.00 PSP™ units to firmware V1.50. See below on instructions how to get the firmware updated.

As many major languages have been added, it's a good time to grab any of our japanese PlayStation Portable™ Value Pack or PlayStation Portable™ units. Keep in mind, though, that only the PSP™ menu language will be displayed in any of the above mentioned languages (including the originally available english/japanese), in-game text will not be affected.

The japanese units currently in stock are equipped with V1.00 (from the Japanese release date) firmware, read on to find out about the update process.

How to update the firmware of your PlayStation Portable™
"Network Update" function
Enable the wireless network module
Select "Network Update"
Select your wireless network
Follow On-Screen Instructions

Update with Memory Stick
Click here to download the firmware image (~14MBytes) (Japanese, any of the grey "Download" buttons, they point to the same file)
Create a folder "UPDATE" in your "GAME" directory on the memory stick
Place the downloaded file in the "UPDATE" folder

Select Game->Memory Stick->PSP™ Update Ver 1.50
Follow On-Screen Instructions
You will need your power supply available in order to go thru the update. There is always a risk in updating any firmware and we can not help in case of failed updates. Be sure to not interrupt power or remove the memory stick during the upgrade process.

Sony™ Connect PSP™
On time with the US PSP™ launch, Sony introduced www.connect.com/psp, their US portal into movies and music on the PSP™.

The page aims to support fresh new PSP™ owners on information on how to encode videos for the PSP™. Worth a look, Sony also lists sample clips for your viewing pleasure. Just download the files and put them onto your memory card to check them out!
